The technique used is always the same: the victim is identified – possibly an elderly person, with children, who lives alone -, he or she is contacted on the telephone explaining that the son or daughter caused a serious road accident and that to prevent it from ending up in prison requires money and precious objects. The victim often panics and acquiesces to the demands. It’s the famous fake accident scam, used the day before yesterday to deceive an 85-year-old who lives in Pesaro. An accomplice knocked on his door, later turning out to be a 22-year-old Neapolitan, instructed by the creators of the scam to go to the elderly man to withdraw cash (around 250 euros) and gold jewelry.

The young man, headed to Rimini as per the instructions of the “leaders”, did not imagine being monitored by the men of the Pesaro Flying Squad, who operated in synergy with their colleagues from Rimini. When the Neapolitan arrived in Rimini by taxi, with the loot hidden in a backpack, he was intercepted in Via Flaminia by the Riccione traffic police, who arrested him almost red-handed for aggravated fraud.

The 22-year-old Neapolitan, who lives in Vele di Scampia, appeared in court in Rimini this morning for the direct hearing. He explained to the judge that he had been approached in Naples by two strangers who offered him 20 thousand euros to travel by train to Pesaro and collect an envelope from an elderly man’s house. From there the subsequent indication to take a taxi and head to Rimini, where he would probably have to deliver the loot to a “trusted person”. A version that did not convince the judge, who has the arrest was validated and his transfer to the Casetti prison was arranged, also given his precedents (a 4-year sentence for drug dealing). His defender, the lawyer Igor Bassi of the Rimini Bar, raised an objection of territorial incompetence and, at the end of the hearing, the file was sent to the Pesaro Prosecutor’s Office. The suspicion, however, is that behind the 22-year-old, who would be a mere executor, there is an organization dedicated to scams against the elderly.
