Out of the blue, without warning – not for us of course. The African weather-climate castle, triggered by the usual Subtropical Anticyclone, is collapsing and is collapsing heavily, thunderously, right down to the foundations which seemed to possess unprecedented solidity.
But no, here the atmosphere is ready to amaze us. Surprising us positively or negatively depends on your point of view. Certainly amazing from the point of view of temperatures, because in no time at all – just a few days – we will go from Summer to Winter.
Surprise at the rainfall, which could be bad locally. But the type of precipitation will also be surprising, because we will have the snow return in style. Certainly in the Alps and at interesting altitudes to say the least, but this time there should be no shortage of surprises even in the Apennines as well as on the reliefs of the two Major Islands.
And so the question arises: is everything normal? Well, if we consider classically spring atmospheric turbulence, the answer is yes, everything is under control.
If we consider the enormous temperature change we are about to experience, the answer is no, it is not normal. It isn’t for one simple reason: too hot. If temperatures hadn’t reached the absurd summer values of recent days, well, the now imminent cold wouldn’t have been much of a surprise.
In this period it is decidedly more natural to talk about winter-like temperatures rather than the opposite. So yes, the collapse of the African castle is generating a lot of amazement and will continue to generate more in the coming days as the worsening comes to a head.
The fact is that we must take note of it, changing the course of events is not possible. If it had been possible we would have gladly avoided the previous thermal excesses, certainly not the good weather which is always pleasant but if we had had the choice we would have chosen mild, not scorching temperatures.
