The European elections to be held at the beginning of June “will be crucial because they will decide which direction we will take. You will have a say in shaping Europe’s future. Vote, don’t let anyone else decide for you. If democracy wins, all Europeans win and, for this to happen, I am counting on all of you. Use your vote.” This is the appeal made by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, in a video message broadcast during the presentation to the media of the main results of the latest Eurobarometer survey before the European elections in June 2024.
The electoral event, he observed, is “one of the greatest democratic exercises in the world”; The European Parliament elections “are being held at a critical moment as citizens are dealing with the socio-economic implications of a complex geopolitical situation”. Commenting on the data released, Metsola noted that “European citizens are aware that the stakes are high” and that “voting is even more important considering the context”. And if on the one hand the candidates are asked to “focus their electoral campaign on the fight against poverty and social exclusion, on strengthening public health systems, on supporting the economy, on the creation of new jobs and on strengthening defense and security of the EU”, on the other hand European citizens “believe that peace and democracy are the guiding values of the EU that Parliament should continue to defend in the next five years”. “We will do it,” assured the president of the European Parliament. “The last few years have been challenging,” Metsola acknowledged, claiming that “we have achieved results and I am happy to see that European citizens understand this, that the majority of Europeans want Parliament to have a more important role. And who agrees that their country benefits from joining the EU and, above all, that they intend to go and vote.”
