body still “stuck”, house to be demolished

CAROVIGNO – The body of Cosimo Guarini, the 66-year-old who died last Thursday (April 24) following the collapse of the attic of his home, caused by an explosion, is still available to the judicial authorities. The tragedy occurred in via Salvatore Di Giacomo, in Carovigno.

The pensioner’s body is located in the morgue of the Ostuni cemetery. On the day of the tragedy, a cadaver inspection was carried out by the medical examiner, on behalf of the Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office. Today, in all likelihood, the prosecutor will decide whether to return the body to the family or whether to order an autopsy.

The explosion occurred around 6.40 am. The cause was a gas leak from the stove cylinder. The attic of the single-storey house collapsed. Frames and rubble were thrown onto the road, within a radius of metres. For the 66-year-old, there was nothing that could be done.

Guarini had been living alone for about a year, following the death of his mother. Two brothers and a sister living in Germany cared for him. The neighbors speak of him as a discreet and gentle person. Even the mayor of Carovigno Massimo Lanzilotti, who went there immediately after the tragedy, knew him.

Now the question arises of securing the destroyed apartment, located at number 19, and the two adjacent apartments, at numbers 21 and 17 respectively. The municipal administration has issued three ordinances: one addressed to Guarini’s family members; the other two to the owners of neighboring houses. The latter were invited to vacate the bedroom at number 21 and the living room at number 17

As regards the destroyed property, all the interventions necessary to make it safe must be carried out “with the utmost urgency, through renovation interventions (including demolition) that the heir owners deem necessary, in order to put an end to the situation of serious danger to public safety”.
