Petrol and diesel continue to increase at the distributors: the new prices are very high and the State profits

The petrol price continues to rise dramatically. In recent weeks, thanks to the high tension situations in the Middle East, the price at the distributor has reached new levels of attention. In Italy, due to excise duties, motorists are forced to pay a much higher amount for fuel than many other European citizens.

In recent days, as we were saying, there is a continuous increase: at self-service stations, petrol in many distributors has reached 1.913 euros per litre, in others it has even around 2 euros per litre. Diesel, however, rose to 1.811 euros per litre. Served fuel, however, is now projected towards 2,050 euros per liter while diesel stands at 1,950 euros/litre. LPG at 0.715 euros/litre and methane at 1.323 euros/kg.

In the situation is even worse on the motorway: served at 2.249 euros per liter against 1.950 euros/litre for self-service but in some distributors it has even broken through to 2.5 euros per litre. Self-service diesel is at 1.909 euros/litre against 2.175 euros/litre for served diesel and the situation is no better for Gpn and methane at 0.850 euros/litre and 1.472 euros/kg respectively.

In short, a real bloodletting, especially for those drivers forced to use private vehicles due to work needs. Without forgetting the hauliers, with a domino effect that also affects food prices.

Petrol, new prices and state revenues

If motorists are increasingly in difficulty, it is the State who is laughing. For every full tank of fuel, 2/3 goes away in VAT and excise duties, with higher taxation whenever the price at the pumps rises. At the moment in Italy 1,071 euros go away in taxes to the State for each liter of petrol purchased. And I’m 3.2 billion euros in taxes to the State arising from fuels.

The State, in fact, uses this money to pay primarily for pensions, both disability and “normal” pensions and many other services. And, as mentioned, the disadvantage compared to other European citizens is notable. If in Italy the average is 1.9 per litre as regards petrol in the first week of April, the European average is 1,801 euros/litre. A good 5.5% more which becomes 6% with reference to diesel. Numbers that in fact make Italians spend 5 euros more than other Europeans for each full tank.
