Over thirty years since the mafia massacres of Capaci and via d’Amelio. Terrible and indelible moments in everyone’s memory. Also this year, the State Police, in numerous cities throughout the country, has promoted an initiative capable of conveying messages of hope and legality, to cultivate the memory of those who sacrificed themselves in the fight against the mafia .
With this spirit, yesterday, the director of the public security police station of Acireale, first director Tito Cicero, delivered the oil from the Garden of Memory of Capaci to the bishop of Acireale Monsignor Antonino Raspanti, president of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference, already vice president of the CEI, so that it can be consecrated in the Holy Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday and be used during the liturgical year.
The oil is produced from the olive trees grown by the “Quarto Savona 15” association, the non-profit organization founded by Tina Montinaro, who together with other local organizations takes care of the Garden of Memory, inaugurated on 23 May 2017, a space close to the place where it was consumed the Capaci massacre with the attack on judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the escort agents Antonio Montinaro, Rocco Dicillo and Vito Schifani.
The oil was born from the fruits of those olive trees dedicated to those who, belonging to the institutions, fell at the hands of the mafia, trees grown in a space that has witnessed a tragedy. A space that has been able to convert the sacrifice of the victims, the pain of the family members, into a social commitment, a symbol that takes on a spiritual value of great importance.
A sign aimed at reminding us not to lower our guard in the face of the danger that the mafias still represent today but also a moment not to forget the sacrifice of the mafia martyrs.
