Bari, brawl between prisoners in the Rems: four guards injured

The security guards were apparently injured trying to break up a fight between inmates with psychiatric problems at the Rems in Spinanzola.

SPINAZZOLA (BARI) – Four security guards were injured during an intervention to break up a fight between two inmates with psychiatric problems. It happened in the Residence for the execution of security measures (Rems) in Spinazzola, in the north of Bari. Reporting the episode, which occurred in recent days, is the secretary of Filcams Cgil Bat, Tina Prasti, who sent a heartfelt letter to: prefecture, police headquarters, ASL Bat and the ministries of Justice and the Interior to ask for interventions protection of facility staff.

According to what was reconstructed by the trade unionist, the fight broke out “from an argument between two inmates who were in the infirmary”. The intervention of a security guard would have temporarily restored calm, but only for a few minutes. «In fact, after less than ten minutes, the discussion started again, resulting in an attack with one of the two inmates hitting the other. The intervention of the guards – explains Prasti – limited the injuries to the victim but did not calm things down”.
It would seem, in fact, that the alleged attacker “was joined by other inmates who attacked the security guards”. Only the arrival of the police “restored calm in Rems”. «Decisions on the merits can no longer be postponed. In the past – the trade unionist states in conclusion – we obtained an increase of one unit per shift but it is clear that it was of no use. We need to imagine other hypotheses because we, together with the workers we represent, are very worried.”
