Yesterday evening 27 March 2024, around 11pm Arpa Piemonte was alerted via the single environmental emergency number (112) to intervene Beinasco in support of the Fire Brigade present in the area from around 8pm following the receipt of several reports of a gas-like odor.

Arpa’s activity

Arpa’s activity, which continued until 4 am, made it possible to identify the cause of the odor problem in a malfunction of a part of the system of a waste treatment company in the municipality of Orbassano. The system that highlighted the anomaly was therefore temporarily interrupted.

The activities of the emergency response service are still ongoing through monitoring of air quality and checks in the company.

“The measurements carried out with portable instruments did not reveal anomalous concentration values compared to the environmental background until midnight yesterday. This morning the measurements of air pollutants continued by Arpa technicians to verify the quality of the air in the municipality of Beinasco.

Today’s weather conditions which are partially favorable to dispersion will further reduce the inconvenience felt by the population last night. Arpa also continued checks within the company in the morning which caused the emission of pollutants due to a technical problem in a plant. The plant which had had a temporary shutdown has been restarted.”

Daniel Cannati, mayor of Beinasco:

“Since yesterday evening several people from Beinasco have reported to me and the police an anomalous smell, similar to gas, which has invaded a large part of the city. We immediately took action and I was on the field until late at night together with the Fire Brigade , to Arpa, to the Local Police and to councilor Bettolo to delve deeper and understand the origin.

From the investigations carried out, the origin was identified in a waste treatment company in a neighboring municipality, already known to the Beinasco residents, whose activity was stopped immediately. Even if investigations into air quality have not shown any substances harmful to health, I want to be clear: we are not willing to tolerate them. We are ready to evaluate legal actions to protect the well-being of the people of Beinasco against a company that for the umpteenth time has become the protagonist of an accident whose unpleasant consequences fall on the citizens whom I have the duty and honor to defend. This time they are “only” bad smells, but it is not tolerable that episodes of this type should be repeated.

Together with the Fire Brigade, the Local Police and ARPA we will continue to monitor the quality of the data and investigate the dynamics of the malfunction and if faults are found, the administration is ready to expose itself in the appropriate places to assert the rights of the citizens of Beinasco”.
