AGUGLIANO – Five years have passed since the road homicide that ended the life of Huub Pistoor in the territory of Agugliano, between Jesi and Osimo. He was a Dutch citizen, resident in Osimo for many years, electronic engineer, youth mountaineering guide of the CAI section of Ancona, member of the Popular School of Philosophy of Macerata. A worn-out trailer with serious technical inefficiencies had detached itself from the engine of a truck and hit his car while he was returning home after a day of work. The driver of the lorry with trailer was sentenced to one year and four months, a suspended sentence.
In recent years the family has twice opposed the request for dismissal decided by the Prosecutor’s Office of Ancona against the owners of the company and owners of the two heavy vehicles: «The appeal against the dismissal was accepted by the ECHR European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The case will be examined, the Italian State will have to respond and give explanations regarding the system of inspections of heavy vehicles (vehicles in those conditions should not have circulated but had instead passed the inspection) and also regarding the archiving (the Prosecutor’s Office held only the Moldovan driver responsible and the responsibilities of the owners of the transport company (owners of the vehicles and of those who were responsible for inspection and maintenance) were not ascertained – say the close family members -. Furthermore, the Ancona Prosecutor’s Office, following a complaint presented by Pistoor’s family, also cited the driver of the truck for failure to provide assistance. It wasn’t him who called for help but he continued for further kilometres.” The hearing has been scheduled and will be held in September.

The family, in Italy and Holland, has been able to count in recent years on the support of important associations committed to prevention, road safety and sustainable mobility such as Asaps, the Michele Scarponi Foundation, the Lorenzo Guarnieri association, Fiab Fano , on the attention of the Italian press and Dutch newspapers such as De Telegraaf. Comrade Gioia Bucarelli commented on the appeal accepted in Strasbourg: «An important first stage, a collective victory of citizens, associations, families of victims, people who believe in change, in a path without violence. It was what we hoped for as a matter of principle, to honor the many lives lost on the roads, to urge commitment, attention to prevention, respect and justice for all victims.” In this period you are participating in the national mobilization of associations and families of road victims against some measures and critical issues of the new Highway Code which neglects the problem of speed, hindering the initiatives of the Municipalities to reduce speed limits.

«The Chamber of Deputies voted on the Minister’s proposal on the new Highway Code, without accepting any of the requests made for months in parliament and, with great vigor, in recent weeks by family associations of victims on the road and by over 40 squares throughout Italy, animated by associations and activists for road safety and sustainable mobility but the mobilization of the associations of relatives of road victims, of many other organizations and of thousands of citizens will not stop”, writes the Michele Scarponi Foundation. They ask the Meloni Government and all the majority and opposition forces to rewrite the reform of the Highway Code together with the associations, which will have to be discussed in the Senate in the coming weeks, eliminating all the critical issues of the current text and inserting the necessary rules that are missing.
