But the value still has to grow

BARI – “The first, partial but significant rise in prices on the Foggia and Bari commodity exchanges is a positive sign, the first after months spent between stagnations and declines.

The striking action decided by CIA Agricoltori Italiani to desert the meetings of the Commissions, considering the continuous decrease in the value of the wheat recognized to producers unacceptable, has led to a light being turned on at the end of the tunnel. Just as the decision of some operators to display contracts to create a trend reversal was positive. On this path we must continue the fight and commitment in favor of a more equitable redistribution of value along the supply chain, restoring profitability to the first and most important link, that represented by the producers”.

This is the comment of Angelo Mianopresident of CIA Agricoltori Italiani Capitanata, following the meeting of the Foggia Commodity Exchange where the prices of durum wheat recorded a first significant increase of 15 euros per ton after months of stagnations and declines.

On Wednesday 20 March, in protest against the collapse in prices, CIA Puglia announced the withdrawal of its delegates from the wheat commissions. A week later, namely Wednesday 27 March, prices increased for the first time in many months.

“CIA Italian Farmers of Puglia”, adds Gennaro Sicolo, regional president and national vice-president of the organization, “has been putting the cereal issue at the center of its union agenda of demands and proposals for a year. Last April 2023, together with the national president Cristiano Fini we launched the petition which is approaching 80 thousand signatures and we managed to involve, also in our demonstrations in Foggia and Bari, 45 Apulian municipalities in support of a battle that through the protection of Italian cereal cultivation also intends to guarantee the quality and healthiness of the wheat-pasta supply chain for consumers. The fruits of that battle are starting to be reaped now, with the reactivation of the National Experimental Commission on the price of wheat and, above all, with the Government’s commitment to starting the Telematic Registry and all the other measures from 1 July 2024 of Granaio Italy. Prices are still too low, but Europe’s decision to impose duties on some exporting countries, starting with Russia, represents a first response to the many requests that CIA Agricoltori Italiani has launched in recent months”.
