Avalanche Studios cuts staff and closes two studios, the Contraband and Just Cause team

Avalanche Studiosthe studio behind the Just Cause series and currently working on the Xbox exclusive Contraband (not to be confused with Hogwarts Legacy’s Avalanche Software), has closed its offices located in New York and Montreal And fired over 50 employeeswhich represent approximately 9% of the total workforce.

The news came via a statement published on the company’s official website which states that “this is an exceptionally difficult decision, but we believe it is necessary to ensure a stable and sustainable future to the company”.

“Our focus is now on supporting all Avalanchers during this difficult time. We are grateful for the invaluable contributions of those who leave and remain committed to creating incredible gaming experiences for our players.”

The crisis in the videogame market continues to claim victims

The layoffs at Avalanche Studios are unfortunately not that surprising, given that they add to the over 20,000 gaming industry workers who have been fired in the last two years.

Said this, the closure of the Montreal offices in its own way it was difficult to predict, considering that they had opened in October last year, after the acquisition of Monster Closet, a team composed of a group of veterans in the triple-A market who would join the development of current and future IPs by Avalanche Studios. In practice this team was inaugurated and dismantled in less than a year.
