Scammers rip off even the best: Core i9-14900K without chip sold to an overclocker

Scammers in the world of hardware are nothing new and according to the latest news, they manage to scam even the most experienced. This time the protagonist of the story is Safedisk, famous overclocker who, according to what was told by https://twitter.com/hkepcmedia/status/1786056438214959169would have been ripped off by a Chinese seller.

Safedisk would in fact have purchased a processor Intel Core i9-14900K, probably hoping to win the “silicon lottery” and continue breaking records; for the less experienced, we remind you that he is one of the best overclockers in the world, therefore not exactly a person of little importance in the environment.

The overclocker received the processor without the original packaging, but in a blister with a very particular note: opening the package would have voided the warranty. An unusual element, which does not inspire confidence and which immediately made Safedisk suspicious.

Once the chip was installed it showed no sign of life, so the overclocker decided to uncover it using a tool for delid, to inspect the situation. Once the IHS was removed, Safedisk was faced with… nothing: the die was not there. The chip was probably removed by the scammer, who left only the substrate, the IHS and some residues of the resin that is used to attach the die to the substrate.

This news comes in addition to the recent RTX 4090 sold without chip, not an absolute novelty given that already in January we told you about video cards sold without GPU. Scams of this kind are increasing more and more, especially in China; it is always good to be very careful when buying hardware on the second-hand market and, although it is not always easy to identify any rip-offs, it is always worth keeping in mind that if a product is priced too cheaply, then there is probably something going on . In fact, scammers manage to deceive users by offering high-end hardware at rock-bottom prices, but would you really trust someone who sells, for example, an RTX 4090 for 500 euros?
