CarBack: here is the new rear radar launched by Trek

The Trek CarBack rear radar it is a new proposal that is presented today by the American brand and which expands the offer in an increasingly expanding segment.

The trailblazer, now several years ago, was Garmin with its Varia, which then evolved over time to also integrate a rear video camera. Bryton and MagicShine products have also recently arrived. Today it’s Trek’s turn.

There are some technical differences between one product and another, but what is certain is that anyone who has used a rear radar at least once can hardly do without it.

At the moment we have not yet had the opportunity to test the Trek CarBack, but we are curious to do so, since the features with which it is presented seem very interesting. In the video below you can see how it works:

Trek CarBack rear radar: technical characteristics

CarBack is Trek’s rear radar with integrated light capable of signaling approaching cars.
If road conditions allow, Trek says it can detect approaching vehicles already 240 meters away (more than what is declared on average by competitors) and that the integrated LED light is visible up to 2 km away.

The dimensions are compact and the shape is more square than other products on the market: 28.9 L x 28.2 W x 37.3 H. The declared weight is 40 grams.

The light can be used in 4 different modes: Day Flash (daytime flashing) of 90 lumens, Day Steady (daytime flashing) of 25 lumens, Night Steady (nighttime flashing) of 5 lumens and Night Flash (nighttime flashing) of 5 lumens.

The declared autonomy of the battery is more than 7 hours, but we don’t know with what flashing mode. The battery status can be easily checked via a series of LEDs located on the side of the instrument.

To be used with Smartphone or cycle computer

The Trek CarBack rear radar is equipped with Ant+ and Bluetooth connectivity, therefore it is compatible with the majority of GPS cycle computers on the market today. Warnings about approaching vehicles can be both visual and acoustic. With compatible devices, CarBack is also able to signal the approach speed by changing the color of the warning band on the display.

Alternatively, the CarBack radar can be paired with your smartphone thanks to the Trek Accessory App.

Compared to competitors, use via smartphone offers additional features. The radar, in fact, is declared to be so precise that it can precisely indicate the distance of the approaching vehicle and also if he has moved to a safe distance to overtake.

What’s in the box and how much it costs

In the box there is the CarBack radar, a USB-C charging cable and a Quick Connect universal rear mounting bracket. For users of Bontrager saddles, the interesting aspect is the compatibility with Bontrager Blendr systems, which make fastening safer and more accurate.

The list price is 199.99 euros.
