Windows 11 has been Microsoft’s main operating system since late 2021. Yet, after more than two years, it is losing market share.

In whose favor? Of Windows 10, which is instead approaching the end of its extended support, expected in October 2025.

The reference is to the quotas of the various versions within Windows. Taking the entire desktop world into consideration, Windows occupies 72.22%, while OS X holds 14.73%.

The quotas of Windows 10 and Windows 11

According to the latest Statcounter calculation, in April the share of Windows 10 grew by 0.96% compared to March; while that of Windows 11 fell by 0.97%.

The situation had already arisen the previous month, when Windows 10’s share had grown by 1.81%; while that of Windows 11 had dropped by 1.46%.

Windows 10 has thus surpassed the 70% share of Windows desktop operating systems, while Windows 11 is below 26%. It had reached its maximum share of 28.16% last February.

Windows 10 remains a viable alternative for most users today. Although the new features are exclusive to Windows 11, the growth in Windows 10’s share indicates that for many people it is more than enough and, above all, that it is this operating system that people are focusing on when they need to replace an old Windows device.
