Samsung returns as leader in the smartphone market: overtaking Apple

The smartphone market continues to grow and Samsung is once again leading this rise: according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) «Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker», Global smartphone shipments increased 7.8 percent year-on-year to 2,89.4 million units in Q1 2024. This is the third consecutive quarter of shipment growth. The Korean house she took back the podium after a very brief overtaking by Apple in the last quarter of 2023. It’s been 13 years since anyone has managed to undermine Samsung from first position, which now – in the following quarter – it has already managed to regain.

«As expected, the smartphone recovery continues to move forward the market optimism that is slowly growing among the most important brands», explained Ryan Reith, vice president of IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers group. «While Apple managed to take the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung has successfully reaffirmed itself as a leading smartphone supplier in the first quarter. As the recovery progresses, we are likely to see top companies gain share as smaller brands fight for positioning.”

Samsung today occupies the 20.8 percent of the market, displacing Apple which now occupies second place with 17.3 percent. The drop in sales of Cupertino’s Apple-branded products came after its first-place performance in December 2023. In third place we find Xiaomione of the leading Chinese smartphone manufacturers, which was awarded the 14.1 percent. Samsung’s success is partly due to the launch of its latest line of top of the range, the Galaxy S24 serieswhich has led the Korean company to face shipping more than 60 million phones since the beginning of the year.
