Disappointing qualifying for Ferrari but there is confidence for the race: “Confident because we found the right setup”

Complicated qualifying for Ferrari on the Barcelona circuit with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz beaten in Q3 by poleman Lando Norris and the usual Max Verstappen but also by the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The Monegasque, despite starting further ahead than his teammate, does not hide his disappointment: “I’m very disappointed with my performance in qualifying, but I’ll go into the race confident because we’ve found the right setting. I think it will be complicated to catch up with Norris and Verstappen, but we have a race to play with Mercedes. We are more than 3 tenths behind Norris, he is crazy especially because we often say that Barcelona is quite representative for the rest of the season. Now we have to try to maximize the weekend and still try to look for important points” the words of the 26-year-old from Monte Carlo at the end of qualifying.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur was slightly more optimistic: “We saved a new set of tires, Mercedes didn’t. We are disappointed because Leclerc made a mistake in Turn 5, otherwise we could have taken third position. We had a good qualifying, let’s hope that tomorrow (today, ed.) the temperatures will be lower. The objective for the race is to score points, we have the pace to pass Mercedes and we will try to fight for the podium. I didn’t expect to be closer here in Spain because the others are not sleeping and are bringing new updates, and even on this type of track the impact of the tires is much greater than the weight of the improvements” commented the number one of the Maranello team at the end of qualifying for the Spanish GP.

The weather conditions for today’s race

Uncertain weather at Montmelò ahead of today’s match. Although the sky above Barcelona is very cloudy, according to the forecast, the chances of rain during the race are decreasing. The Spanish GP race could therefore also be held on a wet track at the start which will then gradually dry out as the laps go by, but a start on a dry track with showers later during the race cannot be completely ruled out either. However, the air temperature (around 23° C) and the wind (which blows weakly from the south-east) should not affect the race.

Even today, the historic Barcelona circuit located in Montmelò, where F1 has raced since 1991, hosts the Formula 1 Spanish GP. The layout of the Spanish track, now 4.657 km long after the elimination of the last chicane, has become a right-hand bend to travel at high speed.

Despite this substantial change, the track located in Catalonia, due to its mix of high and low speed corners, continues to be considered one of the best for evaluating the balance of a single-seater. The layout of the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona now features two straights and 14 turns in total.

As for the brakes, as highlighted by the official Formula 1 supplier Brembo, it is a circuit that is not very demanding on the brakes with six braking stops and only 8.5 seconds per lap in which the drivers will be asked to apply the brakes on their single-seaters . The most critical point is in turn 10, where the single-seaters go from 303 km/h to 116 km/h in just 102 meters covered in 2.08 seconds with the drivers subjected to 4.9 Gs of deceleration.

The winner on this circuit last year was Max Verstappen who, in his Red Bull, preceded the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The Dutchman also set the fastest lap in the race with this new track layout: 1:16.330.

F1, the starting grid of the Spanish GP

The starting grid for today’s race sees Lando Norris starting from pole position. World championship leader Max Verstappen starts alongside the British driver from McLaren. Second row occupied by the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, while the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will start the race from fifth and sixth place respectively. Sergio Perez will instead start 11th with the other Red Bull: the Mexican, eighth in qualifying, also pays the three-place penalty suffered in the last race in Montreal.
