Another semi-final for Jannik Sinner, number seven of 2024, but certainly one of the most tiring and mangy of the whole year. The South Tyrolean surpasses the 193 centimeters of Jan-Lennard Struff’s master only in the third set at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, after two hours and 29 minutes of battle and eleven wasted break points. In the end the score reads 6-2 6-7 7-6, once again sending the blue player among the best four on the scoreboard. He has done it in every tournament this year, except Madrid where he retired on the eve of the match against Auger-Aliassime.
Today after the first set everything seemed extremely easy for the blue, just like for Berrettini yesterday afternoon, then the series of wasted break points (eleven between the second and third sets, 2/18 the total figure) put some doubts in the mechanism of Jannik, favoring the German’s return to the competition (who is still n.41 in the world and on fast courts is a very uncomfortable customer). An important crossroads was the sixth game of the third set, where Jannik canceled the first and only break point granted to Struff and kept the match in balance. The tie-break of the third set was then decisive, with the world number 1 managing to erase the one he lost badly in the second set and ending the hostilities at the threshold of two and a half hours.
This is the 36th annual victory for Sinner, with just three defeats, while Struff remains stable in 41st place and is now packing his bags towards Wimbledon.
