TOUR DE SUISSE WOMEN. VOLLERING TRIOS THAT OVERCOMES LONGO BORGHINI AND SEALS THE RACE

After the inaugural stage in Villars-sur-Ollon and the individual time trial on the second day, Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx – Protime) scores a hat trick and wins the last stage of the Tour de Suisse Women anticipating in the sprint, at the finish line in Champagne, Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl Trek) and Neve Bradbury (Canyon//SRAM Racing), sealing the 2024 edition of the race which also sees her triumph in the general classification with 1’28” ahead of Neve Bradbury and 1’30” over the Piedmontese in the jersey green – white – red.

THE STAGE – The final stage of the Tour de Suisse saw the protagonist Urška Žigart: the 27-year-old Slovenian with courage is leaving the group around the thirtieth kilometre of the race and remained in the lead alone for a long time. Just before the start of the climb up the La Vue-des-Alpes climb a squad composed of Nienke Vinke (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Steffi Häberlin (Swiss National Team), Rosita Reijnhout (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Juliette Labous (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Brodie Chapman (Lidl – Trek), Évita Muzic (FDJ – SUEZ), Niamh Fisher-Black (Team SD Worx – Protime) and Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon//SRAM Racing) reached Žigart while the platoon with the yellow jersey was chasing Demi Vollering more than 2 minutes behind.

When moving to GPM, Antonia Niedermaier, Niamh Fisher-Black, Juliette Labous, Évita Muzic and Steffi Häberlin remained in command while the other forwards lost their wheels. At the same moments, after a great job by Gaia Realini, Elisa Longo Borghini started from the ranking group, leading Vollering, Bradbury, Niewiadoma and Cadzow. Cadzow slipped along the technical descent while, with great determination, the Italian champion and the Dutchman in the yellow jersey led the chase to the pacesetters.

When passing the Bevaix Flying Finish (won by Antonia Niedermaier) the leading group was reported to be only 20″. The hunt for the fugitives ended, thanks to twelve kilometers from the finish line when a masterful Brodie Chapman placed herself at the service of the captain Longo Borghini.

A few kilometers later, between sprints and sprints, four took advantage: Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini, Neve Bradbury and Katarzyna Niewiadoma. The tandem Canyon//SRAM Racing, already a protagonist yesterday, he asserted his numerical superiority and took turns attacking the two opponents, forcing them to expend energy to respond to the attacks. This led to the sprint launched by Longo Borghini at the exit of the last corner but then clearly won by Vollering.
