Fognini’s retirement, the tennis player from Arma di Taggia has clarified and announced when he will hang up his racket.
Many times the haters gave him up for dead. And just as many times, amazed and with their tail between their legs, they saw him return to the stage on sumptuous and important stages. Because if there’s one thing that Fabio Fognini what he taught us is that in tennis, as in life, you can never say never: events almost always take an unexpected turn. His story proves this incontrovertibly.
It happened to him over and over again, in fact. Just when he seemed about to let go and leave the scene, he always found, somewhere, that bit of strength he needed to get the racket back in his hand. So much so that, at the level of resilience, has absolutely no rivals. If we had even just a pinch of his strength and obstinacy, the world, but also the circuit, would definitely be a better place.
“I don’t know if in the future I will have the humility to play various games Challengers to try to come back”, said the tennis player from Arma di Taggia a couple of years ago, reflecting on his future and the ailments that could prevent him from competing at high levels. Fortunately he had that humility and here he is, now, in the round of 16 of the Sassuolo Challenger, “teaching” young talents on the pitch what levels of stubbornness a champion who can be said to be worthy of the name can reach.
Fognini’s retirement, that’s when the inevitable will happen
Last week he reached the quarterfinals in Perugia, only to be put aside by Luciano Darderi. On that occasion, interviewed by Corriere dello Sport, he thought well of clarifying things regarding his retirement from tennis, a particularly hot topic for some time now.
“I’m happy, obviously happy for the tennis I’m expressing. The audience here is really warm. For me practically against everyone it’s teacher versus student, given his age – he joked, alluding to the fact that he now almost always plays against young talent – I’m here because I still want to play and my goal is the main draw of the US Open. Times have changed, I have other priorities, but I continue to have fun and as long as that is the case I will continue“.
Fognini doesn’t have an expiry date already stuck on him, in short, despite the fact that a couple of years ago he was the first to think that the limit was full. And let’s hope, then, that he continues to have fun and, consequently, to entertain us too.
