From Jonathan Milan to Filippo Ganna. A passing of the baton between the two Olympic track champions, which Italy hopes will materialize tomorrow. After the explosive victory of the Lidl-Trek sprinter, tomorrow it will be the turn of the “national Pippo” to take center stage in the thirty-one kilometer time trial from Castiglione dello Stiviere to Desenzano sul Garda.
The Italian time trial champion is certainly the most awaited man and probably also the huge favorite for the final victory. There is the defeat suffered in Perugia to avenge, where however it was the last uphill part that made the difference in favor of Tadej Pogacar. The Maglia Rosa managed to give over a minute to Ganna, recovering all the disadvantage suffered up to that point. At the finish line the look of the INEOS rider certainly expressed disappointment for that failed victory and tomorrow there is certainly the possibility of taking revenge.
The path is definitely favorable to Ganna, with a treacherous first part full of curves at the Castiglione delle Stiviere exit and with the first intermediate stage located in Solferino after 7.8 km. Second chronometric measurement at the passage under the San Martino tower after a few small changes in Cavriana and Pozzolegno. Shortly afterwards you will arrive on the suggestive panoramic road that runs along Lake Garda, immediately after passing Sirmione, to proceed towards the finish line in Desenzano.
Ganna is the man to beat and definitely Pogacar will be the blue’s first rival. The Slovenian knows he can definitively mortgage his pink jersey, further distancing all his rivals, but to beat Ganna he will perhaps need a greater feat than that of Perugia.
For the Italian champion it is certainly a very important test ahead of the Olympic time trial in Paris. Not winning tomorrow could also raise some alarm bells. However, a perfect path for Ganna, with Italy dreaming of a fourth victory and wanting to see the tricolor whiz by on the INEOS rider’s jersey towards the long-awaited success.
