Jannik Sinner, reaching the semi-final (the third of his career) in Miami, has reached another, very personal but significant goal. The Italian became the fifth player since 2002 to reach at least the semi-finals in the first three major tournaments at the beginning of the year, namely the Australian Open, Indian Welles and Miami, one after the other. Who were the other four to have accomplished this feat? The Fab Four of modern tennis, namely Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. But then, immediately after Sinner, on the Italian night, Daniil Medvedev became the sixth since 2002 to achieve the feat. The Russian, Jannik’s opponent tomorrow, in 2024 reached the final of the Australian Open (defeated by the blue), the final of Indian Wells (where he lost to Alcaraz) and now the semifinal in Miami, where he will meet again ‘Italian.

Sinner, in 2024, has already reached four semi-finals and boasts 20 victories and only one defeat (39-3 from the US Open, simply incredible). He won the Australian Open, lost to Alcaraz in seeds at Indian Wells and is now trying to reach his third final in Miami, after those lost in 2021 against Hurkacz and last year against Medvedev. The first to succeed in the feat was, also due to a purely age-related fact, Roger Federer. In 2005 the Maestro reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open, in that wonderful match he lost against Marat Safin, and then dominated and won Indian Wells and Miami, while he achieved the hat-trick in 2006, when he won both in Australia, in California and in Key Biscarne. In 2009 the Swiss reached the final in Melbourne, in the epic match with Nadal where he was defeated, and in the semifinals at Indian Wells and Miami, while in 2011 he arrived “only” in the seeds in all three tournaments. Federer achieved the treble again in 2017, in that extraordinary start to the season, winning the Australian slam and the first two 1000s of the year.

Novak Djokovic could not be missing from this special ranking, as he even achieved the hat-trick three times: the Serbian managed to win all three tournaments one after the other, Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami in 2011, in 2015 and in 2016, while in 2012 he won in Florida and Melbourne but surrendered in the semifinals at Indian Wells. In 2008, Rafael Nadal reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells and the final in Miami, in 2012 he reached the final in Melbourne and the semifinals in California and Key Biscarne. Andy Murray succeeded in the feat in 2015, with the final at the Australian Open and in Miami and in the semi-final at Indian Wells.
