Endless controversy
Almost a week has now passed since the Australian GP but the debate on theAlonso-Russell episode of the penultimate lap, with the Mercedes driver going off the track and the penalty subsequently inflicted on the two-time world champion, accused of having induced his rival’s error with early braking. Alonso and the Aston Martin team – although not presenting a complaint – strongly defended their position in the press, denying the desire to carry out a dangerous maneuver against Russell.
Perplexity then also created them broadcast by the radio team immediately following the accident, with Alonso complaining of an alleged accelerator problem which, however, was no longer mentioned after the race. The person who bluntly decided to take sides against the veteran from Oviedo was the former Dutch rider Giedo van der Garde who used very harsh – and vulgar – terms to define the #14’s behaviour.
Van der Garde on the attack
Talking on the podcast’DRS: De Race Show’, which sees him in the role of co-host, Van der Garde defined Alonso “an asshole“. “I understand the penalty, he really went too far – said Van der Garde – it was a dirty trick on Alonso’s part. You can see how much slower it was going than the previous corner. Braking in the middle of the straight is absolutely forbidden. I have a lot of respect for Alonso, but he was a real a**hole. Russell was too, but a little less so“, he concluded, in an ironic tone.
