SPOLETO (by Giacomo Restani) – The regular season of Nuova Pallavolo Spoleto ends with a defeat in the women’s Serie C championship. The Spoletos surrendered in three sets to Bartoccini Perugia and finished in sixth place in the standings. In the play-off quarter-finals the Spoletos will meet Bartoccini Perugia again.
In the initial 6+1 coach Di Titta lines up Maggiolini as a diagonal playmaker with Capezzali, Boldrini and Giordano in the centre, Caraboni and Iovieno as the spikers and Coresi in the role of libero.
In the initial phase balance prevails, Caraboni finds the 6-5 diagonally. Iovieno closes a long exchange from place 4 for the 9-8. Bartoccini becomes more incisive on serve and in attack and scores 5 points in a row and Di Titta is forced to call time-out at 9-13. Spoleto struggles to close down the attacks and the Perugia lead 11-17. Some good defensive actions by the hosts allow Spoleto to close the gap at 16-20, but Bartoccini escapes at 22. The set ends 19-25 on a four-touch infringement by Monini.
The game resumes with a less precise Spoleto with errors between dribbling and attack and the score at the start is 1-7. Caraboni tries to restore energy to his players with a nice diagonal shot, but the score is already 5-13. Two consecutive attacks bring the home team down by five points (10-15). Spoleto’s attempts at a comeback were thwarted by Perugia’s final lead (11-18). Iovieno continues to put points on the scoresheet, but Bartoccini is too far away (13-21). Mariani comes in to serve and Spoleto shortens by a break, but the Perugians are now distant and close 18-25 with a lob.
At the start of the third set, coach Di Titta’s girls appear more determined and remain tied at 5-6 with a first half from Giordano. After just one point, Perugia’s superiority emerged and contained the Spoleto attacks and went ahead 6-12. A lucky ace from Perugia brings the score to 9-15. Spoleto sends Ammetto and Sgrigna onto the pitch, but the Perugia team extend further to 12-22. The match ends 15-25 with an ace from Bartoccini.
