The autopsy, which continued until late Wednesday evening, revealed that the boy’s death was caused by injuries to both lungs, causing irreversible hemorrhagic shock. Thomas died quickly. The examination confirmed the number of blows that emerged during the body inspection, that is, 25. Two sixteen-year-olds were arrested for the murder. The only real intent was “to cause suffering and death”, as can be read in a passage of the order with which the investigating judge of the Juvenile Court of L’Aquila validated the arrest. The circumstantial evidence, the judge writes, “highlights how the determining cause of the action is the harmful impulse, that of causing suffering and killing a human being”. An atrocious crime committed for ‘futile reasons’, a circumstance that is contested to the two minors.
