Mattarella: “With elections we will consecrate EU sovereignty”. June 2: “Memory is civic duty”

Like every year, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella sent a message to the prefects of Italy on the occasion of 2 June, Republic Day. “Remembering the ideal legacy of those founding events is a civic duty,” wrote the head of state. Who added on the next European elections: “We will consecrate EU sovereignty” (THE ELECTIONS SPECIAL – TAKE THE TEST ON THE PARTIES). Then in the afternoon, the head of state spoke at the Quirinale on the occasion of the concert to the diplomatic corps accredited in Italy on the occasion of Republic Day, saying: “Russia is experiencing an anguished arms race. Commitment to peace but without insidious bartering”.

“Decisive page of democracy”

“In 1946, the choice of the Italian people for the Republic wrote a decisive page of democracy and laid the foundations for a renewed social pact, which would find complete articulation in the Constitutional Charter. An outcome which was reached after the tragic war events and the of Liberation from Nazi-Fascism, punctuated by multiple episodes of heroism and brutal massacres, the eightieth anniversary of which is being commemorated in numerous locations this year”, wrote Mattarella. “Remembering the ideal legacy of those founding events”, such as the Liberation struggle and the republican choice, “is a civic duty and a precious opportunity to reflect together on the reasons that animate the life of our community, inserted today in the wider community of European Union which we have decided to create with the other free peoples of the continent and whose sovereignty we will consecrate in a few days with the election of the European Parliament”, he added.

“Remembering – Mattarella wrote – is an exercise proper to every citizen and especially to those who, exercising public functions, find in the constitutional principles of freedom, equality and solidarity a compass of sure orientation in the face of the complex challenges of the present. Prefects’ work “precious”

Regarding the prefects, Mattarella added that their work is “valuable for the unity of the country and its cohesion” and is valid “from the spaces of mediation for the protection of employment and for overcoming social conflicts, to the care, with local administrations, of the weakest sections of the population, to effective reception and integration paths for migrants”. “This applies – the president wrote – for the protection of citizens’ freedoms in carrying out daily life, for the development of effective security frameworks for increasingly safe and livable territories. It applies to the guarantee of the exercise of the right of assembly and demonstration”. And again: “With the fight against criminal tendencies, violence and disintegration, with the promotion, particularly among the younger generations, of the diffusion of the values ​​of respect for person and dialogue between the distinct political, social, cultural and religious positions, important testimonies of devotion to the Republic and sense of the State are affirmed”.

Mattarella: June 2 strengthens “the pride of participation”

Mattarella’s letter continues: “When profitable synergies are created between local institutions and connection paths are favored between the center and the territories, when – as has also happened in recent months – emergency events are tackled together, when local authorities are supported in overcoming moments of administrative and financial crisis, the unity of the democratic edifice is strengthened, enhancing the principle of autonomy within the horizon of solidarity”. Then the letter concludes with this hope: “In renewing the feelings of gratitude of the Republic for the work carried out, I renew to the prefects and all those who work for the good of the community my best wishes for good work and a happy holiday, in the hope that the anniversary of 2 June will strengthen the awareness and pride of participation, the prerogative of every citizen”.

Mattarella: the Republic’s choice is called to responsibility

In the late afternoon, the head of state then spoke at the Quirinale on the occasion of the concert for the diplomatic corps accredited to Italy. “On 2 June 1946, Italy chose the Republic. “As on 2 June 1946 “we feel – today at a global level – the need to commit ourselves to peace, to pursue freedom and development together everywhere, democracy and the spread of well-being, civil maturation, economic growth and rights: this appears to us , in the international community, the great challenge, the horizon we face. By determinedly rejecting insidious bartering: security to the detriment of rights, absence of aggressive conflicts in exchange for submission, order through fear and repression, economic prosperity in exchange for subjection”, said President Mattarella. “With the invasion of Ukraine – an independent and sovereign country – Russia has brought the war back to the heart of Europe and once again dug a furrow between the countries of the continent that we dreamed of in peace and collaboration, free and democratic from Lisbon to Vladivostok The Russian Federation has demolished the security architecture that has guaranteed peace and stability on the European continent for many decades, since the Helsinki Agreements of the mid-1970s; a behavior that is all the more serious as it was carried out by one of the countries on which the greatest responsibilities fall in the international community, as a permanent member of the Security Council”, added the President of the Republic.
