After a huge success, in these hours Helldivers 2 ended up in the storm for imposing the connection to the PlayStation Network also on PC. The huge protests from players who purchased it on Steam show no sign of stopping and the game has been withdrawn from sale in 177 countries where PSN is not available.

In the meantime, around 200,000 reviews have hit Helldivers 2, with the developers appearing to be between a rock and a hard place. On one side the players, on the other Sony which on the website where it talks about connecting PSN on PC, depending on the country, writes “Some PlayStation games may require access and connection to a PSN account” or “Access to PSN is optional when playing a PlayStation game on PC.”

Currently the situation has not changed, but clearly the media coverage could lead to evolutions. “Starting May 6, all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam will be required to link their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account. Existing players on Steam will begin to see mandatory login on May 30 and will need to link a Steam account and PlayStation Network by June 4th”, is the message from a few days ago.

We are discussing solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries. Your voice has been heard and I’m doing everything I can to speak on behalf of the community, but I don’t have the last word” is the latest tweet from Johan Pilestedt, creative director of the game and CEO of Arrowhead.
