The Democratic Party is considering the possibility of nominating Ilaria Salis for the European Parliament. The idea was proposed directly by secretary Elly Schlein, during a meeting with her close collaborators before the official discussion on the European elections. Salis, an anti-fascist teacher, has been detained for over a year in Budapest, Hungary, accused of having participated in the attack of some neo-Nazis during a demonstration. A hearing was held today in which the Budapest court rejected the request to be placed under house arrest in Hungary presented by the thirty-nine-year-old’s lawyers.

The discussion on the candidacy during an informal meeting of Schlein with his loyalists

According to what was reported by Repubblica, Schlein would have summoned his closest collaborators before the meeting on the list for the European Championships. During this meeting, the possibility that the anti-fascist teacher could run for a seat in Brussels would therefore be discussed. The Dem secretary did not mention this topic during the official meeting of the party executive, probably to avoid leaks of information. The Salis family, again according to the Largo Fochetti newspaper, has happily ruled out direct political involvement for now, even if a seat in the European Parliament would allow their daughter to enjoy immunity and avoid detention. However, Schlein has not yet made a final decision on this point, but has asked his colleagues to “evaluate the matter”.
