After having made the history of alternative rock in the 90s and 2000s and having explored all the technical possibilities of the electric guitar, bringing it back to the center of the rock scene with its virtuosity, power and talent in mixing musical genres, from metal to rap, Tom Morello he is ready to return with what he defined: «My first real rock’n’roll album».
With Zach De La Rocha Tom Morello created the explosive militant rap rock sound of Rage Against the Machine which has become an unsurpassed point of reference, with Chris Cornell in the Audioslave he immersed himself in the expressive depth and emotional impact of hard rock metal, with Boots Riley he returned to rap rock with the Street Seepers Social Club, then experimented with folk with the project The Nightwatchman and with the crossover in the series of albums released under the name of The Atlas Underground and he also entered by merit into the cinematic breadth of rock of the E Street Band of Bruce Springsteen by going on tour with them. What he missed after all these experiences, as he himself said, is: «Greater purity».
In a new interview, Tom Morello he said he loves playing with a band «Because what you create comes from an alchemy of people» but being a solo artist «It’s a pure experience: you create something that no one else can create». His creative process for the new album, still untitled and launched by the single Soldier in the Army of Love (in which his son played guitar Roman Morello 13 years old) was totally spontaneous: «I let myself be guided by the music: what I was writing had a rock sound and therefore I understood that the time had come to make my first rock album».
An important contribution came from Roman Morellowho according to Tom at thirteen is already a guitar virtuoso like him: «One day at home, passing by his room I heard some gigantic chords in Drop D» said Morello referring to one of the most used alternative guitar tunings in indie rock, «I stopped, and said: what is this? Roman replied: nothing, I’m just trying out some riffs. What do you think about it? They fit together? And I said: Son, they’re very good and we’re about to write our first song together». Soldier in the Army of Love comes out on June 28th: «It’s a song about the redemptive power of rock’n’roll. A cascade of riffs from two generations of Morello and a devastating solo in which you won’t be able to understand who is playing between and my son».
