Sunday between strong thunderstorms and an African blaze

Let’s prepare for Sunday 9th with Italy literally divided in two on the weather front. On the one hand there will be severe bad weather, on the other the first intense African flare-up of the season.

The African anticyclone Scipione, which gave Italy days of intense heat and clear skies, is gradually giving way to a storm front arriving from Northern Europe. The regions of the Centre-North are therefore preparing to face even intense storm phenomena, while the South continues to enjoy typically summer conditions.

Centre-North: The sky is darkening
The day of Sunday 9 it will begin with a sky that will gradually become covered with clouds over much of the Central-North. From the early hours of the morning, northern and central regions will see an increase in cloud cover, reaching complete coverage in some areas. This cloudy preamble will be the signal of the imminent arrival of precipitation.

Fire afternoon in the Northwest
The afternoon will be the critical moment for the north-western regions. Liguria, Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and western Lombardy will have to prepare for strong storms. Extreme phenomena such as hailstorms, strong gusts of wind and heavy showers. The inhabitants of these areas are invited to follow the Civil Protection updates and to avoid, if possible, unnecessary travel.

Center: Piovaschi in Macchia di Leopardo
The central regions, although not spared from the worsening, will suffer milder phenomena. Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and upper Lazio may be affected by occasional showers. These phenomena, unlike those in the North, will be more sporadic and of lower intensity, similar to rapid summer showers.

South: Summer Never Gives Up
In stark contrast to the rest of the Peninsula, the South will experience a postcard-perfect day. The strong influence of the anticyclone Scipione will guarantee clear or at most partly cloudy skies from Campania to Sicily. The Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts will be the ideal destination for those looking for a carefree day at the seaside. The major islands, Sicily and Sardinia, will also benefit from this favorable context.

The Night of the Triveneto
As the sun goes down, attention will shift towards the Triveneto. Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia will be reached by the storm front in the late evening and during the night hours. The phenomena, although attenuating compared to the afternoon, could still be locally intense. Particular attention must be paid in mountain and foothill areas, where the risk of landslides and mudslides increases due to rainfall.

Temperatures: a resilient summer
Despite the varied meteorological picture, temperatures will remain at summer values across the entire national territory. Even in regions affected by thunderstorms, thermometers will not experience significant drops. This is partly due to the “buffer” effect of the retreating anticyclone and partly to the humidity that precedes the storms, which tends to keep the perceived temperatures high.

North: Highs between 26°C and 31°C, with peaks of 33°C before thunderstorms.
Centre: Temperatures between 28°C and 32°C, with peaks of 34°C in internal areas.
South: Peaks of 35°C-37°C in Puglia, Sicily and Sardinia, locally higher in the more internal areas.
