Next week: Italy divided between violent storms and further African flare-ups

Next week will be extreme in terms of weather and climate with Italy being divided between strong thunderstorms with large hail in the North and a record heat wave (for the period) in the South.

Conditions are expected to worsen already Monday 10 June on northern regions due to the arrival of one disturbance descending from Northern Europe. Given the impetuous entry of fresh air currents at high altitude and the great potential energy at play (thanks to the heat transported by the African anticyclone) we expect intense thunderstorms with the risk of local hailstorms also of medium/large size. The same goes for Tuesday 11 June when storms will hit almost all the northern regions: as often happens in this season these will be phenomena lasting 1 or 2 hours at most, so the whole day won’t be ruined. More sunshine will affect Emilia Romagna and Liguria.
A completely different story, however, in the Centre-South and on the two major islands where the African anticyclone will dominate the scene and will attract very warm air masses of sub-tropical origin straight from the Sahara desert. In these sectors, temperatures are expected to be far higher than the averages for the period with maximum peaks up to and including 38-40°C on Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, Ionian Basilicata and Puglia.

The key phase of this exceptional heat wave is expected between Monday 10th, Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th June.
Then our attention shifts to the second part of the week: between Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th June In fact, the passage of a second storm front is expected. According to the latest updates, Italy will find itself right in the middle of a battlefield between colder and more unstable currents driven by a cyclone descending from Northern Europe and extreme heat rising from Africa. The heat transported by the African anticyclone will provide additional fuel for the genesis of violent phenomena. A potentially explosive mix from an atmospheric point of view.

Risk of strong thunderstorms and hail in the North; extreme heat in the Central South and the Major Islands
Once again, with this type of dynamic, the Northern regions will be most exposed to the extreme weather events like cloudbursts and hailstorms; for details and for any Civil Protection alerts we will have to wait a few more days given the still rather long time gap.
Subsequently, from Friday 14th the anticyclone should strengthen and guarantee sunny days in all regions with a hot climate, yes, but not excessive.
