We are just under two years away from the twenty-fifth anniversary of Shrekthe beloved CGI film from DreamWorks that revolutionized the landscape of cinema animation in 2001.
The franchise had a resounding success resulting in three sequels. However, excluding the successful spin-off films based on the green ogre’s companions in adventures, the main series made its last foray onto the big screen way back in 2010 with Shrek and they lived happily ever afterthe fourth installment of the franchise.
A decidedly long wait for a franchise that is still much loved, but something seems to be moving on the horizon. In recent years, discussions on the subject have reignited fifth chapter of the franchise, and now Shrek seems ready to return with a new adventure, as confirmed in the last few hours by Eddie Murphyofficial voice of Donkey.
During a recent interview dedicated to the fourth chapter of the saga of Beverly Hills Copthe star gave away some updates which will not fail to spark the enthusiasm of fans:
«We started doing the new Shrek five months ago. I did it, I recorded the first act, and we’ll do it this year, we’ll finish it. Shrek will come out, and Donkey will get his own movie. We will also do Donkey. So we’re going to do a Shrek and a film dedicated to Donkey.»
Murphy then clarified the timing for the creation of the two filmswhich aim to bring back the two most beloved characters of the franchise:
«No, we won’t make them at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it will be released in 2025and we are about to start Donkey’s.»
The last film in the franchise to hit theaters, Puss in Boots 2 – The Last Wish, proved to be a huge success with critics and audiences, grossing approximately $485.2 million at the global box office. The time to bring Shrek and Donkey back to the big screen therefore seems ripe, and we just have to wait for further confirmations on the two eagerly awaited films.
