Upcoming Lord of the Rings projects promise to revive Middle-earth in both film and television, and in both live-action and animation, but many fans have questioned the need to continue exploring the franchise created by JRR Tolkien.

Speaking to Deadline Philippa Boyens and Fran Walshwho wrote and produced all the previous films in the saga together with director Peter Jackson, and who will also write the screenplay for Gollum together with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (authors of the animated film The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim) they stated: “It’s been a joy to work with Andy Serkis in the pastwho served as second unit director during the making of The Hobbit films, and we know he has the energy, imagination and, above all, understanding of the world of Middle Earth and the story of Gollum to lead this new film . We collaborated on eight films together and every time it was a fantastic experience.

Boyens added: “The story of Gollum is one of the most compelling for us in terms of a character, because we couldn’t delve into him as much as we wanted in the previous films. Which sounds strange when you say it, given how well known he is globally. But Gollum’s life takes place in such an interesting time in Middle Earth. When we were asked what film we wanted to make, this was the first story we thought of.
