The Peace Committee of Ruvo di Puglia announces with emotion that on Tuesday 2 July, at 7 pm, it will host Patrick Zaki for the presentation of the book “Dreams and illusions of freedom. My story”, published by “La nave di Teseo” in 2023.
The meeting will take place at the auditorium of the “O. Tedone” scientific high school. The event, organized with the patronage of the Municipality of Ruvo di Puglia, in collaboration with the “L’Agorà – Bottega delle nuvole” bookstore, will have free admission.
He will dialogue with the author Pietro Pasculli, a doctoral student in international relations, with the help of the interpreter Heather Marie Bhimull of the Sintagma Association.
The volumes, which can be purchased during the event, are already available at the “L’Agorà” bookshop.
On February 7, 2020 Patrick Zaki returns to Cairo, to his home, from Bologna, where he studies. We want to stay for a few days. It’s just the break of a student returning home temporarily. But things don’t go as planned: Zaki is arrested and remains in prison for 20 months.
Bologna, its university, and the whole of Italy react and have not stopped demonstrating since February 7th.
Patrick Zaki tells his story in this book: what really happened that day and what happened then, in the following days: the interrogations, the isolation, the torture, the comparison with a world – that of prisons – in which everyone is reduced to an inhuman condition. And what kept him alive: his studies, his passion for football, music, the affection of his loved ones, of his beloved Reny, of all of Italy.
“Through Zaki’s experience we want once again to draw attention to issues that unfortunately remain topical in various parts of the world and in some ways also in Italy: the violation of human rights, repression and the right to dissent, courage in not remaining silent in the face of injustices, the importance of international law. Its contribution of knowledge will be an additional tool for us to understand what is happening around us.”
