CIVITAVECCHIA – “The prison is a piece of the city. In Civitavecchia there are two. Prisons are part of the urban, human and social fabric of the city.
They are in terms of the people who work and provide services behind bars, but above all for the safety of the entire prison community. The national situation of detention institutions is dramatic, especially from the point of view of overcrowding.
People who commit petty crimes, such as theft, drug possession or dealing in counterfeit products, are punished with prison.
Thus the prison population is destined to inexorably rise.
Much has been said about the problems linked to the reintegration into society of those who have served their sentence: in many cases, upon leaving prison, the ex-prisoner is not in a position to have a home; no one rents accommodation to those who have just returned from detention and similar resistance is recorded towards those who can benefit from an alternative sentence to prison, such as house arrest. The path of those who, after their prison experience, are looking for a job for survival is equally complicated.
In the wake of what happens in many prisons in the country, what happened inside the Borgata Aurelia prison is only the latest of attacks and events that now characterize life behind bars. Already on April 7, a Penitentiary Police officer was confronted by an inmate who punched him in the face. A similar attack was recorded in March, while on 2 January a prisoner, who had hidden a rudimentary stick made from a chair in his trousers, grabbed an officer by the neck and then barricaded himself in his cell, threatening to set it on fire.
For this reason, special attention and a watchful eye will always be dedicated to the living conditions in the city prisons, from which we will never turn away”
