MOLFETTA – Drummer in the last trio of the late guitarist Hiriam Bullock and already alongside Pat Metheny and Chick Corea, the Mexican percussionist and singer Israel Varela will be the luxury guest of the presentation of «This Is Just Me», the new project by the Apulian pianist, keyboardist and composer Vincenzo Cipriani. The appointment is scheduled Wednesday 3 July (9pm), in the San Domenico cloister in Molfetta, for the “special events” section of the Kaleidos ’24 season signed by Pietro Laera for the Fondazione Musicale Valente. The two musicians will be joined by the Eclectic Inside Project string quartet formed by Miriam Campobasso and Elisabetta Palmiotti on violins, Francesco Capuano on viola and Laura Ferulli on cello.
Winner of a Euro Latin Award a few years ago and currently busy promoting his new single «Ubud» dedicated to Indonesia, a prelude to the upcoming album «Eleusis», Varela has long collaborated on Cipriani’s compositions in which the percussions, in particular the cajón, interact with a classical ensemble, to which the combination of string quartet and piano must be traced. The leitmotif of this new project is, in fact, the contamination between styles, genres and musical worlds that are also very distant from each other, which are connected in a synthesis of classical music, jazz, flamenco, funky and world music. After all, from two musicians like Vincenzo Cipriani and Israel Varela one cannot expect a performance tied to the traditional stylistic and aesthetic canons of a single genre, because both come from complex experiences through which crossover artistic and stylistic choices have matured. A border territory along which Cipriani has always moved both in live performances and in studio productions, as demonstrated by the three albums of unreleased compositions published so far («Weke Music for Piano & String», «Eclectic Inside» and «At Time It Is»). Among other things, Cipriani is the project designer and artistic director of the Motive project funded by the European Community in which fifteen Italian, Lithuanian and Polish musicians will give rise to a new musical collective based on the contamination with electronics, rock and jazz of the traditional music of their respective places of origin.
