After Intel’s investments in European chip production, another major manufacturer is looking to the Old Continent for its plants. In the last few hours, in fact, confirmation has arrived that work has begun on a Chip manufacturing plant in Novara owned by Silicon Box Ltd., a Singaporean company specializing in semiconductors.
According to what the main Italian newspapers report, the agreement for the start of construction of the plant was signed Friday 28th June by the CEO of Silicon Box, Byung Joon Han, by the co-founders of the company Sehat Sutardja and Weili Dai, by the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, by the President of the Piedmont Region Alberto Cirio and by the Mayor of Novara Alessandro Canelli. The signing took place in the setting of Ministry of Business and Made in Italy a Roma.
With the agreement, Silicon Box Ltd. to invest $3.2 billion in the Italian market for the construction of its new factory, which should create up to 1,600 direct jobs, to which, however, those in the related industries will also need to be added. «Silicon Box’s advanced packaging facility in Novara will create up to 1,600 jobs and bring first-of-its-kind advanced semiconductor packaging and testing capabilities to Italy and Europe», explained the CEO of Silicon Box Byung Joon Han on the sidelines of the signing of the agreement in Rome.
According to estimates by the Singaporean company, thestart of the plant’s chip production should be set for the 2028given the long times necessary for the construction of the Fab and for chip testing. The plant, explain the leaders of Silicon Box Ltd., will be specialized in the assembly and testing of cutting-edge semiconductors, making Italy one of the most advanced producers in Europe.
In particular, Sehat Sutardja reported that the production «will strengthen our competitiveness and that of the Italian production system in theArtificial Intelligence, in Large Language Models (LLM)in electric vehicles and automotive, mobile, wearables, edge computing and materials sciences». In doing so, Silicon Box will replace Intel, which in January put plans for a Fab in Veneto on hold.
