As expected, given the delicacy of the institutional plot, the nomination of Alessandra Camporota – current prefect of Modena – as a member of the municipal council of the new mayor Massimo Mezzetti has sparked controversy. The transition from a role of super partes guarantor to a purely political role has inevitably created confusion.
Antonio Platis, vice-regional coordinator of Forza Italia, is the one to launch the attack: “The choice of Mayor Mezzetti to indicate the Prefect in office as a member of the left-wing council is a very serious fact, without precedent. The excuse of waiting a month for the arrival of the pension and therefore from the leave is not an acceptable justification. If a servant of the State decides to stand as a candidate or run for a political party, he must be on leave. Here, however, they are going straight ahead and the PD manages to mix the institutional offices with those of the party. The Prefect – I wonder – is the representative of the Government at the local level or of the left-wing municipal council of Modena? Will the next provincial committee for order and security be chaired by the representative of the Government or by the Councilor of the left?”
“We have involved the Group Leader in the Senate Maurizio Gasparri (FI) who said he was amazed and incredulous and also assured me that he will immediately ask the Minister of the Interior Piantedosi to account for the Caporota affair”, concludes Platis.
The mayor of Modena replies to the declarations of the blue. “The attack launched by the vice regional coordinator of Forza Italia, Antonio Platis, against Dr. Alessandra Camporota, is decidedly uncomposed and institutionally ungrammatical”.
Mezzetti adds: “Furthermore, Platis and, if he were to answer the truth, the group leader in the Senate of FI, Maurizio Gasparri, intend to turn to the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi asking him to intervene. By doing so, they would put him in serious embarrassment. It will in fact be worth remembering that it was Minister Piantedosi himself, still in full function as Prefect of Rome, who accepted the post of Minister of the Meloni government. It was October 22, 2022. At the time, we did not register any protests from the current zealous protesters”.
The issue, as often happens, is both formal and substantial. On the merits, everyone will be able to express their own opinion on the political opportunity of such a choice, while from a purely technical point of view, Mezzetti informs: “Dr. Camporota, before accepting my proposal, informed the Chief of Cabinet of the Minister, and that she is currently on vacation. A behavior fully respectful of the institution for a servant of the State who has decided to dedicate herself to our city. During the period that Dr. Camporota is on vacation and that separates her from the definitive leave from her position, the functions are carried out by the Deputy Prefect, guaranteeing the Prefecture of Modena full operability”.
