Closely in the running for an EU nomination (also due to the “English factor”)

Certainly for Italy the game is more complex than for other countries. Both because of the recent choices of Georgia Meloniboth for the shortage of valid candidates that the government can put forward in the face of the offers that Ursula von der Leyen will make in the coming days. There is a fact that is becoming stronger, in the analyses and dynamics that are taking place in the axis between Rome and Brussels, in these hours: if we take away Raffaele Fitto, who remains our leading candidate, it seems that at Palazzo Chigi at the moment we have no other names of equal weight.

A political weight, which however dmust also have precise technical skills, as well as linguistic ones (speak English well)which has not been identified for other exponents. In the game that will take place until July 18, the day in which von der Leyen will have to be reconfirmed, barring surprises and snipers, by the EU Parliament, one fact appears not marginal: the government does not seem to have a list of alternative names to Fitto, in case the delegations require specific know-how.

The game that Meloni will play in view of the vote that will have to confirm or deny Ursula’s encore is no less difficult. There are many variables, and there is also the possibility that the Germans of the EPP are not so united, that they could split in the secrecy of the ballot box, which is something that it would multiply the value of possible FdI support for the confirmation of German policy. It could be an extra weapon for Meloni, during the negotiations for the formation of the Commission, but also a nice puzzle, given that in Italy a deputy prime minister like Salvini talks about von der Leyen as if he were the devil, more or less like Orban, while Tajani can only support a candidate who represents the EPP political family. In any case, the Prime Minister has an Italian delegation of 24 deputies and a European one, that of the ECR, which currently exceeds 80 deputies: they may be irrelevant numbers, but also strategic and worth weighing, given that von der Leyen needs parliamentary guarantees.

Returning to the posts in Commission noIt’s no secret that there is a fairly widespread deficit in the government with respect to the English languagewhich is essential for working in Brussels: the same Guido Crosettowho has also been circulated as a candidate in the event that the delegations offered to Rome were Defence and the development of an EU military industry, does not appear to be fluent in the first language used in the EU buildings. In any case, he says he is not interested, as is Giancarlo Giorgetti, who, however, has been doing, like Fitto, a full immersion course in the first language spoken in the world for a few months. These are considerations that may appear marginal, but are not if they are added to previous professional experience and the fact that they will have to pass a meticulous examination in front of the Strasbourg Parliament. An unpublished anecdote from a few months ago tells us that the Amazon CEO, visiting Palazzo Chigi, left an hour later dissatisfied, because Meloni had Minister Urso next to him, who in turn needed a translator, which halved the discussion time.
