Hail on the way, yellow alert in Piedmont: Friday 28th hot but Saturday 29th strong storms

In Piedmont today, Friday 28 June, was the hottest day of the month of June 2024, temperatures increased by about two degrees compared to yesterday, reaching even 33-34 degrees. But tomorrow, Saturday 29 June, the yellow alert returns for strong thunderstorms in the plain areas and the north-western sector.

This is what ARPA, the regional environmental protection agency, says. Temperatures will begin to drop tomorrow when a low depression will move from Spain to the west of the Alps, directly affecting Piedmont.

The first precipitations will develop in the morning on the western Alpine arc and will be associated with Saharan sandfall currently present in the Mediterranean basin.

In the afternoon the arrival of unstable cold air will weaken the anticyclonic structure; the precipitation will extend from the Alps to the foothill areas and will take on a thunderstorm character.

The heaviest rains are expected in Canavese, Valli di Lanzo, upper Vercellese and Verbano due to the rising of humid air masses induced by the Alpine reliefs. Heavy thunderstorms with hail are expected also on the western piedmont belt, hills and plains of Turin including the capital and flat areas of the provinces of Novara and Vercelli. Also likely to be of interest Langhe and Monferrato while less intense phenomena are expected in the Maritime and Ligurian Alps and in the southernmost sectors of the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. The storms will also be accompanied by strong gusts of descending wind, lightning and local flooding may occur. On Sunday 30 June the depression will move away towards the northeast, favoring an improvement in the weather in Piedmont starting from the southern sector; However, there will still be heavy rainfall in the northern sector in the hours before dawn.
