In 2023, 4 and a half billion spent in Campania on durable goods (+7.9%)

According to the Findomestic Observatory, it is the seventh region for spending on durable goods. The mobility sector is the driving force. Results higher than the national figure for two-wheelers and telephony. Benevento is the province with the most consistent growth (+9.2%), but in the capital, families spend more.

In 2023, 4 billion and 598 million euros were spent on durable goods in Campania, 7.9% more than in 2022. A figure that puts the region in seventh place in the national ranking for overall spending on durables. According to what emerges from the thirtieth report of theFindomestic Observatory (BNP Group) in collaboration with Prometeia, the increase in purchases of durables in Campania is higher than that of the South (+6.4%) although lower than the national figure (+8.9%). The spending trend in the region was better than the reference macro-area in almost all sectors, with results also exceeding the national average for motor vehicles and telephones.

“As in other areas of the country, growth was supported above all by the mobility sector,” comments Claudio Bardazzi, head of the Findomestic Observatory. “With increases of 17.4% for new cars (822 million euros of total expenditure), 18.4% for used cars (1 billion and 375 million) and 27% for motorcycles (268 million)”.

Increase also for household appliances (+ 2.6%, 419 million), while furniture (-0.7%, just over 1 billion total expenditure) and telephony (-0.5%) show a slight decrease. Information technology (-6.5%) and consumer electronics (-29.3%) also show a decline.

FAMILY EXPENDITURE. Thanks to a modest per capita income, equal to 16,747 euros (more than 6 thousand euros lower than the Italian average), in Campania the average expenditure per family on durable goods according to the Findomestic Observatory stands at 2,062 euros: almost 800 euros less than the national average.

Among the provinces, Avellino occupies the relatively best position (2141 euros per family), in 81st place among the 107 Italian provinces. Naples, Salerno and Benevento follow closely behind, while Caserta is detached, which with its 1,934 euros dfamily spending is only positioned 102nd among the Italian provinces.

AVELLINO FIRST IN CAMPANIA FOR AVERAGE EXPENDITURE PER FAMILY, 2,141 EUROS PER HOUSEHOLD. Families in the province of Avellino are those in Campania who spent the most on average on durable goods in 2023, as highlighted by the Findomestic Observatory, which this year reached its thirtieth edition. Specifically, each family spent 2,141 euros on durable goods (+7.3%) for a total of 362 million euros (+7.2% on 2022), showing a preference for the car market, where 113 million were spent on used cars (+18.7%) and 72 million on new ones (+17.8%).

Double-digit growth also for motorcycles, where 13 million were spent, three more than the previous year (+21.7%). In the face of a 30.3% drop in spending on TVs and Hi-Fi systems, the worst at the regional level with a spending of 10 million (compared to 14 in 2022), the people of Avellino kept their purchases in telephony (35 million, -0.9%) and furniture (81 million, -1.4%) stable.

Spending on household appliances is also holding up, remaining at 30 million euros like the previous year (+0.5%). The information technology segment is declining, with a decline of 8.1% (10 million).

BENEVENTO FIRST IN CAMPANIA FOR GROWTH IN DURABLE GOODS EXPENDITURE, 9.2% MORE. Benevento is the Campania province where the durable goods market showed the most dynamic growth in 2023, with total expenditure of 233 million euros, equal to 9.2% more than in 2022.

Benevento, as detected by the Findomestic Observatory, is thus positioned 40th in the ranking of the 107 provinces for growth, ranking first among the provinces of Southern Italy. It is also the only province in Campania with a change in income per inhabitant higher than the average for the South (+6.4% versus +5.5%).

In particular, the automotive sector led this expansion with 79 million euros spent on used cars (+22.9%) and 38 million on new cars (+21.3%). The two-wheeler sector also grew well, with an expenditure of 8 million (+18.9%), three more than in ’22. The household appliances segment (19 million as in 2022, +1.5%) and telephony (24 million as in 2022, -0.2%) remained stable.

In telephony, the province’s resilience is better than the national average decline (-2.3%), which places Benevento sixth for growth in this segment compared to other provinces. In TV and Hi-Fi system consumption, however, a 30% decline is recorded, with an expenditure of 5 million (in 2022, it was 8). The situation is similar also for furniture (-0.5%, 54 million) and information technology (-5.7%, 6 million spent).

CASERTA ONLY PROVINCE IN CAMPANIA WITH AVERAGE FAMILY SPENDING UNDER 2,000 EUROS. Caserta remains the province with the lowest per capita income in the region (14,983 euros) and among the lowest in Italy, in 105th place in the ranking of the 107 provinces. The data is reflected in family spending on durable goods, the lowest in the region with 1,934 euros per household.

This has not prevented growth in the market of the various durable segments, which, as underlined by the Findomestic Observatory, still closes 2023 on a positive note with a total expenditure of 703 million (+8.4%). The driving force, as in the rest of the region, is the increase in spending volumes on used cars (+19.3% to 220 million euros in total), closely followed by new cars (+18.7, volume expenditure of 141 million).

The motor vehicle market is also growing by double digits (+19.4%) reaching 90 million euros. As regards household expenses, Caserta residents choose to buy less furniture with an average expenditure of 417 euros per family (-1.5% on 2022, 152 million) but remain tied to household appliances, with a total expenditure of 63 million euros (+3.0%).

However, the case of consumer electronics is different, where overall spending fell to 15 million (compared to 21 in 2022, – 28.6%). The same goes for telephony (60 million, -0.8%, better than the Italian average but lower than the regional one) and IT with an expense of 20 million (-7.2% compared to ’22).

IN NAPLES SPENDING ON DURABLES OVER 2.3 BILLION EUROS, 3RD IN ITALY FOR TELEPHONY. The durable goods market in Naples experienced a positive 2023, with total spending growing by 7.5% equal to 2 billion and 391 million euros. Thanks to this volume of spending, Naples is fourth in Italy in the ranking of the 107 provinces for spending on durables. As emerges from the findings of the Findomestic Observatory, the most evident increase concerns motor vehicles, with a growth of 30.4% higher than the national average (+24.7%) and a total expenditure of 165 million. The decline in furniture, however, is more limited (561 million, -0.2%) with an average expenditure of 489 euros per family which remains the highest in the region, and for telephony where the situation remains unchanged (-0.1% and 213 million euros) compared to the previous year, contrary to what happens in the rest of Italy, so much so that Naples is fourth in terms of “growth” compared to the other provinces. Information technology was also negative (-5.1%, 78 million).

SALERNO 22nd PROVINCE FOR DURABLE SPENDING VOLUME, NEW CARS AT THE TOP. In the last year, Salerno residents spent 909 million euros (2,078 euros on average per family) on durable goods, 8.4% more than in 2022.

Spending on new cars dominates, the best at a regional level with purchases of 182 million euros (compared to 147 in 2022, +23.1%) which places the city in 21st place among the 107 Italian provinces. As regards household goods, Salerno residents showed a preference for large and small household appliances, spending 75 million (+.1.7%) on these. Opposite trend for furniture (191 million against 194 in ’22, -1.2%), in consumer electronics (22 million, 10 less than in ’22, -29.3%) and in telephony (88 million , – 1%). Worse result in the region for information technology, (23 against 26, -9.9%).
