Silent scene at the oral final exam as a sign of protest. Linda Conchetto, Virginia Gonzales y Herrera and Lucrezia Novello decided to go on strike, even risking failure, in the name of what they themselves defined as a battle of principle against the “unfair” judgment given to their version of Greek in the second written test. The three students of the Foscarini high school in Venice, despite their rebellion against the graduation commission, were promoted with final marks between 71/100 and 67/100. The three young people carried out a protest in the name of all their classmates: 10 out of 14 candidates in fact received serious failings from the external commissioner from a school in Mestre.

The protest: “I do not accept your judgment”

Linda, a model student who got 6.5 in the Greek version (her average for the year was 8), was the first to protest and remain silent. Instead of answering the commission’s questions, she read them a note in which she explained her action: “I have decided that I will not take the oral exam, not because I am afraid of it or because I have not studied, but because I do not want to accept your judgment that does not reflect my work”. Her classmates Virginia and Lucrezia then followed her example.

Public opinion divided

The gesture of the three girls divided public opinion. The class group supported and supported them but there was no shortage of controversy on social media from those who accused the students of “lack of respect”. Strong condemnation was also expressed by Elena Donazzan, education councilor of the Veneto region. “This disobedience must be punished,” said Donazzan. “It is a provocation and a lack of respect towards teachers and the school institution: by doing so they demonstrate that they are not truly mature.” However, in the absence of official reports, the the regional school office did not initiate any proceedings.

Donazzan: “Serious act of disobedience”

The girls’ gesture risked leading to failure as an extreme consequence. Until yesterday, the promotion was not a given, but it arrived today. Linda Conchetto left high school with 71, Virginia Gonzales y Herrera with 65, Lucrezia Novello with 67. “Promoted even by making a silent scene at the oral? Evidently they had done their calculations well, which means that they didn’t even have the courage to take risks”, urged Donazzan, quoted by Corriere del Veneto. “If many of the students in the class got a bad grade in the Greek version,” she added, “it means that they didn’t study or that they weren’t prepared well enough and didn’t reach the required levels. There may have been a problem at the teaching level, but when you enter the world of adults you are also evaluated on a behavioral front, and I define this as a very serious act of disobedience.”
