Beach time between seizures, bans and surveillance.

With summer coming, it’s time to take care of the coasts. In Marsala and Petrosino, a topic which, in truth, should be talked about all year round given the serious coastal erosion underway and the seizures made by the Coast Guard at Lido Boeo and at the Canottieri, following the unauthorized material installed on the beach.

During the City Council meeting on Tuesday 25 June, councilor lilybetano Massimo Fernandez raised the issue relating to the ban on bathing in the Torre San Teodoro area, which has been at the center of a long legal case for years which saw a resolution. “This is one of the most beautiful stretches of sea on the entire coast – said the majority representative – several citizens who frequent the northern part of the Marsala beaches ask me why they can’t use it. I remember that some time ago there was an accident where a child was injured. However, I don’t think that for this reason the beach cannot be used by swimmers. Furthermore, the Marsala Port Authority reports that it is not aware of this situation.”

As for the response to the intervention, we asked the councilor in charge of beaches to get the opinion of the administration. “We are in constant contact with the authorities who have jurisdiction in the sector – he told us vice mayor Giacomo Tumbarello -. this is the matter relating to the kiosk that stood in the area which also involved the municipality before the competent judge. Finally, as per the ruling, the kiosk was demolished. Both the kiosk and a small adjacent structure which was also unauthorized were removed. Then the debris that had remained on the beach after the demolition of the kiosk had to be removed. The ordinance is still in force for the moment but after the consultation with the authorities I mentioned, full usability will be restored very shortly”.

And in fact there are still signs prohibiting access to the sea in the area. Councilor Tumbarello also specifies that, in relation to the beaches, in recent days he is carrying out inspections regarding their cleanliness, because beyond the beaches, those who want to use free beaches must be able to do so freely and in decent spaces. “I didn’t find any particular critical issues in the southern area where I went in recent days,” declared the vice mayor with responsibility for the sector. Another issue is that relating to supervision on the beaches. “We have requested – concluded Giacomo Tumbarello – a related loan to activate the “lifeguard” service in the Region. We are waiting to receive a response which we believe to be positive”, financing which several Sicilian municipalities are trying to access.
