PALERMO – No house arrest, Emanuele Bonafede remains in prison. The Supervisory Court rejected the request for a less afflictive precautionary measure advanced by one of Matteo Messina Denaro’s sutlers.

The ROS carabinieri arrested him and sentenced him together with his wife Lorena Lanceri. Six years and 8 months to the man accused of aggravated aiding and abetting failure to comply with the sentence; 13 years and 4 months to the woman for external complicity in a mafia association.

The Palermo Prosecutor’s Office opposed the request for house arrest. Emanuele Bonafede and Lorena Lanceri hosted Matteo Messina Denaro for months for lunch and dinner (even during the Covid quarantine) in their home in Campobello di Mazara.

“Thus allowing him – say the investigators – not only to spend many hours in complete tranquility and in their company in a domestic – family context but, also and above all, to meet with numerous people and lastly, but not least, to entering and exiting their home by carrying out careful checks to reduce the risk of being spotted by the police.”

In addition to preparing food for the wanted mafia boss, the couple carried out close surveillance on the area: videos from the surveillance cameras of some shops they filmed the two while, after making sure that there were no policemen or carabinieri on the street, they gave their guest the green light to let him leave the house undisturbed.

A relationship of absolute loyalty bound the couple to the boss who reciprocated with valuable gifts: in 2017, the mafia boss acted as godfather of the confirmation to the Bonafede’s son and donated a Rolex worth 6300 euros. The expense was then promptly noted by Messina Denaro in a pizzino.

The investigations also clearly revealed that Lanceri and the boss had a relationship. And it was entered into “competence” with the teacher Laura Bonafede.
