New attack on an ATM in Bitonto.

This time it was the turn of the Deutsche Bank ATM, located on Via Repubblica. The bomb was detonated shortly after 3am last night and the explosion that accompanied the attempted theft shook the entire area, waking up and terrifying the residents.

According to initial reconstructions, the group used an explosive device to try to open the box containing the money. However, the operation went wrong: two of the alleged thieves were seriously injured during the explosion. These are two men who are currently hospitalized at the Bari polyclinic. One is in critical condition in the intensive care unit due to serious brain haemorrhages, while the other is still in the operating room for a delicate facial operation.

Officers from the Bitonto police station are examining the images of the video surveillance cameras of both the area and the credit institution, which recorded the entire event. The police are trying to identify all the members of the group involved and to establish whether they managed to take away the box with the money. The explosion caused the collapse of the compartment in which the banknote dispenser was housed, making it difficult to immediately ascertain the extent of the theft. Forensic police also intervened at the site of the explosion, carrying out detailed investigations to reconstruct what happened and collect useful elements for the investigation. At the moment it is not clear whether there are accomplices on the run nor whether the stolen goods have been recovered.

It is the second attack on an ATM within ten days. The last time the criminals had concentrated their attention on the Monte Paschi di Siena ATM on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Local authorities have reassured that all necessary measures are in place to ensure safety and prevent future incidents of this kind.
