La note from the Irpino Student Collective
In recent months, the global mobilization for Palestine has made history. In particular, in universities and places of knowledge around the world, with strong attention to the developments of the situation, young people and students have been protagonists of the internationalist movement in support of the Palestinian people and resistance. The mobilization also reached Italy, where in addition to the well-attended demonstrations, the university intifada quickly spread to all the universities in the country. At times, notable and considerable results have also been achieved: following this great wave, some universities – Italian and otherwise – have suspended relations with Israeli institutions. This is proof that the struggle always pays off, and that every action aimed at supporting the cause of the Palestinian people is useful in raising awareness among international opinion to intervene in the massacre that has been taking place in Gaza since 7 October.
The images that now reach us every day from Gaza are terrible. After eight months of indiscriminate bombing by the Zionist entity, we count over 37,000 dead Palestinians killed, of these, 15,000 are children. Israel’s genocidal fury in recent months has thrown 77,000 tons of explosives into Gaza, exceeding the quantity used in aerial bombing during the Second World War. In recent months, the Palestinians have lost everything they had left after over 75 years of illegitimate occupation of their lands: Israeli raids have razed hospitals, places of worship, homes, universities and institutional headquarters to the ground. The humanitarian consequences are devastating: more than two million refugees who do not know they can escape, as the Gaza Strip is an open-air prison, and the crossings are blocked by decision of the Zionist government, not even humanitarian aid is allowed in.
In our country and throughout the “democratic” West, repression against those who demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people and their resistance is increasing dramatically. The information censorship used by this government is increasingly suffocating, so much so that it paints the aggressors as attacked and the oppressed as oppressors.
We, with absolute awareness, know well that we are on the right side of history. The mobilizations for oppressed peoples around the world have shown us this: in Vietnam and South Africa the resistance won.
Avellino is a highly depoliticized city. The electoral debate that has magically appeared in the city in recent weeks will disappear after the elections. However, outside the politics of the palace, there is the militant and daily one: ours is a profound commitment to reverse the course and stir the consciences of the people of Avellino. And if in recent months we have tried to stir these consciences on various issues, now we want to do so with regards to Palestine. Avellino cannot remain indifferent to what is happening in Gaza.
For this reason, we have decided to call for a provincial demonstration on Friday 28th afternoon that will pass through the streets of the center of Avellino and that will want to bring the Palestinian question to the center of attention. We appeal to all the entities that are unions, parties, organizations and associations of Irpinia that fight against imperialism and fascism to join the procession on Friday, with the hope that Avellino can also join considerably in the global movement of struggle for Palestine, until its victory.
