University of Pavia, chemical leak from laboratories: two poisoned

Pavia, 25 June 2024 – The Pavia firefighters intervened today morning, Tuesday 25 June, at the Institute of Histology of the University of Pavia, in via Forlanini, in the area of ​​the university institutes which is located within the perimeter of the San Matteo Polyclinic. The people who were at work, inside a laboratory, would have experienced mild symptoms, irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract, immediately raising the alarm.

They are on site specialists from the NBCR team intervened (nuclear, biological, chemical, radiological) of the firefighters, who have isolated the building of the Institute of Histologyafter all the people inside had already left, following well-rehearsed safety protocols.

It still has to be the substance was analyzed that would be accidentally dispersedprobably leaking from old containers, but it would obviously be toxicgiven the consequences immediately felt by the people inside the laboratory.

An intervention by Areu’s medical emergency services was not necessary on site, also because the university building is located within the same walls as the Pavia hospital, but two people still ended up in the emergency room, not in serious conditions, mostly for checks on the symptoms, waiting to know the results of the analyzes on the substance that would have intoxicated them.
