I found a team in difficulty, but with the support of the fans we moved up the table, losing only two games. Initially I dreamed of moving up to Serie A from second place, but we achieved promotion through the playoffs. This success was fueled by an internal fire that united us.
I felt I had brought the team back to the top and I wanted to say goodbye to all the Serie A stadiums. The week of Gigi Riva’s passing was devastating, we were emotionally exhausted. After the match against Lazio, I decided to leave, but the players convinced me to stay. We continued to fight, alternating difficult moments with successes. The team outdid itself, playing extraordinary matches. The fans have always supported us, both at home and away. Before the match against Sassuolo, I reminded the players of Gigi Riva’s words: ‘Behind you there is an entire island’. My career ends in Cagliari, where it began. In difficult times I knew it would end well. I thank God and Saint Rita for this. At the Mapei Stadium, I brought president Giulini with me under the away section, to recognize his sacrifices. The journey with Cagliari was unforgettable.”
