BOLZANO. “The Province of Bolzano had taken action well before the tragic accident at the Aluminum to increase the number of labor inspectorsbut unfortunately different tenders were deserted. The function of the inspector must in fact be valorised, also from an economic point of view. Soon there will be a new tender with new criteria”. This was stated by the South Tyrolean governor Arno Kompatscher responding today (June 25) at a press conference to reporters.

“Accidents like the Aluminum incident leave us speechless – the labor councilor said yesterday Magdalena Amhof – regardless of the cause of the accident, they shed light on the indispensability of measures to strengthen workplace safety.”

“Workplace inspections can reveal safety deficiencies and therefore contribute very effectively to the prevention of accidents, both from a technical point of view and through administrative controls, such as the verification of employment contracts,” explains the councilor. “After a series of unsuccessful competitions, in recent months we have prepared the ground to enhance the professional profile and thus be able to hire other inspectors. Currently we can also count on the full support of the security forces and the Public Prosecutor’s Office”, says Amhof.

Safety at work, according to Amhof, is not a question of political good will, but simply a fundamental right. “We need a cultural change. Only by tightening the network between provincial administration, law enforcement and social partners can we spread a different mentality, so that security checks are no longer perceived as a burden imposed from above, but as a useful preventive measure”.

Just a few days ago the first meeting of the new provincial coordination committee for health and safety at work took place, in which the provincial administration, the South Tyrolean health authority and representatives of the economy and trade unions sit.
