There is also a Barbera d’Asti among the elite wines awarded in the Decanter World Wine Awards, a prestigious international competition of the English magazine Decanter: it is the Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2020 by Emanuele Gambino, a winemaker from Costigliole d’Asti who recently inaugurated the its cellar with adjoining wine resort. The expert judges awarded his “red” 97 points (out of 100) with the Platinum Medal. Only 18 Italian wines have obtained it.

«I am very happy to have been awarded by one of the most prestigious and respected wine competitions in the world – says Emanuele – It is recognition for the serious work and dedication of my entire team, but also for the exceptional quality of our terroir. This evaluation reflects our constant commitment to producing wines that best express the unique characteristics of Barbera and our territory.”

The grapes for this Barbera come from a vineyard in Nizza Monferrato, on a particularly suitable hill. Between 5000 and 6500 bottles are produced per year.

This is Decanter’s tasting note: «Enchanting cherry, blackberry and plum fruits rain on aromatic layers of Mediterranean herbs and earthy violets. Brilliant with energy and freshness, the pomegranate’s lively acidity and lush, structured tannins drift towards the savory finish.”

EMANUELE GAMBINO, THE NEW GENERATION IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THEIR GRANDPARENTS

That of Emanuele Gambino, 41 years old, is a choice to return to the land: today he too is a winemaker like his grandparents were. We are in Costigliole d’Asti, between the Langhe and Monferrato, hills that UNESCO recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2014. Emanuele was born here, territories and places in which he has his deep roots and of which he loves landscapes, people and traditions.

«I personally produce and vinify my grapes with passion and love – says the entrepreneur – with a careful eye on the quality, sustainability and authenticity of my products. Thanks to my winegrowing grandparents, since my childhood I have experienced the atmosphere of rural life, developing a passion for the land and for simple and genuine things. These elements then led me as an adult, after a radical change in my working life, to follow their example.”

A choice made in 2016, the year in which Emanuele began his career as a winemaker, when he began his dream of building his own farm in Costigliole d’Asti where he could produce and vinify his grapes. A dream that has become reality today.
