Decrease in demand for work in Pisa

Pisa, 25 June 2024 – The demand for work from Pisan companies with employees marks a setback in the month of June, recording a -10%, reaching 3,450 hires. The difficulties in finding the profiles requested by Pisan companies in the month reach 53% of the positions offered: an increase of twelve points compared to June 2023. Considering the sectors, June presents a significant contraction in the demand for work in industry, in particularly in the manufacturing and public utilities sectors (-43%), contrary to the growth observed in construction (+7%). The services sector, however, shows moderate growth with strong demand in personal services (+36%) and trade (+14%), while tourism (-4%) and business services (-14%) are experiencing a decrease in demand for labour. The majority of hirings, equal to 910 units, corresponding to 26% of the total, concern operators and workers in catering activities. In half of the cases (51%) these figures are difficult to find, a value that is in line with the provincial average. There is a strong demand for experience in the sector, required in 74% of cases. Despite this, there is also a large demand for young people: 59% of positions are intended for people under 30, a percentage 20 points higher than the overall provincial average.

More than 11 thousand workers are required by companies in the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa in June 2024: a value substantially similar to that of 12 months ago. Given this, the difficulty in finding manpower increases even further. Among the sectors, industry presents positive signs in Lucca and Massa-Carrara, while Pisa, where the crisis of the fashion system weighs heavily, drags the respective provincial data downwards. This, in summary, is what emerges from the data collected for the month of June 2024 on a sample of almost 2,300 companies with employees in the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa from the Excelsior information system, a survey carried out by Unioncamere in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and developed by the Chamber of Commerce of North-West Tuscany and the Institute for Studies and Research – ISR. The provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa are facing an unprecedented demand for work, as demonstrated by data recently published by the Excelsior Information System. With over 11,000 vacancies reported by businesses in June 2024, it is clear that the local labor market is experiencing a critical phase, characterized by significant challenges in sourcing skilled labor. “The data we present today – states the President of the Chamber of Commerce of North-West Tuscany, Valter Tamburini – highlight a varied situation that reflects the different trends of the sectors. A crucial element, however, clearly emerges: the growing difficulty in finding personnel qualified. The growing difficulties in satisfying the demand for work highlight the importance of targeted and timely interventions to facilitate the connection between education and work. In response to this challenge, we will shortly launch a tender, to which we have allocated 100 thousand euros, which will offer incentives. economic benefits to companies that participate in transversal skills and orientation courses in collaboration with upper secondary education institutions connected to the production chains: an essential element to guarantee the availability of qualified personnel in an increasingly competitive economic context.”
